What Makes a Diamond Valuable — And How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Reshaping the Market

What Determines a Diamond's Value?

Every natural diamond is evaluated using the same universal standard, known as the 4Cs:

  • Carat — the diamond's weight. Larger stones are rarer and increase in value exponentially, not just proportionally.
  • Cut — how well the diamond is shaped and faceted, which determines its brilliance and sparkle. A well-cut diamond can outperform a larger, poorly cut stone.
  • Color — graded on a scale from colorless (most valuable) to noticeably tinted. Colorless and rare fancy-colored diamonds command the highest prices.
  • Clarity — the presence (or absence) of internal and external imperfections. Fewer inclusions typically means a higher-value stone.

Beyond the 4Cs, factors like certification (GIA being the gold standard), provenance, and overall rarity all play a role in what a diamond is ultimately worth.

The Diamond Market Has Shifted — Here's Why

If you've heard that diamond prices have dropped, you're not misinformed — it's one of the biggest shifts the industry has seen in decades, and it's almost entirely tied to the rise of lab-grown diamonds.

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds — the difference is that they're created in a laboratory over weeks rather than formed underground over billions of years. Because they can be manufactured on demand, without the scarcity that defines natural stones, their prices have collapsed:

  • Lab-grown diamond prices have fallen roughly 88% since 2020, largely because production capacity scaled far faster than demand, creating a significant oversupply.
  • Natural 1-carat diamonds have also declined.
  • Lab-grown diamonds have grown from just 5.2% of diamond jewelry sales in 2019 to over 42% of all diamond jewelry sold in 2025.

Why Natural Diamonds Still Hold Long-Term Value

Despite the price correction, natural diamonds retain a fundamental advantage lab-grown stones don't have: genuine rarity. A natural diamond took billions of years to form and can never be mass-produced. Because supply is fixed and finite, well-cut, well-graded natural diamonds — especially larger stones (1.00 carat and above) with strong certification — continue to hold meaningfully more resale value than their lab-grown counterparts, whose prices continue to fall as production technology improves and supply increases.

While lab-grown diamonds typically retain only a small fraction of their original purchase price, natural diamonds generally hold onto a significantly larger share of their value over time.

What This Means If You're Selling

If you own natural diamonds — whether loose stones, estate jewelry, or an inherited piece — this market shift actually works in your favor as a seller. Genuine, certified natural diamonds remain in strong demand precisely because they can't be replicated in a lab. At Estatebuyer.com, we specialize in GIA-certified natural diamonds, 1.00 carat and larger, and our team stays current on market conditions to ensure you get an accurate, competitive offer — not an outdated estimate based on pre-2022 pricing.
