Is Your Watch Worth More Than You Think? A Seller's Guide

Before you sell — or even before you decide whether to sell — it helps to know a few basics about what you're actually holding. Here's what our specialists look at, and what you can check yourself first.

Finding Your Watch's Serial Number

Every authentic luxury watch has a serial number, and knowing where to look is the first step to understanding what you own.

  • Rolex (pre-2010 models): The serial number is engraved between the lugs at the 6 o'clock position, visible only when the bracelet is removed. On many models, it's also stamped on the case's "rehaut" (the inner edge surrounding the dial).
  • Rolex (2010 and newer): Rolex moved most serial numbers to the rehaut, engraved in tiny text around the inner rim of the case.
  • Patek Philippe: Serial numbers are typically found on the case, often near the lugs, and sometimes on the movement itself if the caseback is transparent.
  • Omega, Cartier, and most other Swiss brands: Look between the lugs, on the case back, or engraved on the movement — exact placement varies by model and era.

If you can't find a serial number at all, that's not necessarily a red flag — some vintage pieces wore theirs down over decades of use — but it's exactly the kind of detail our team checks carefully during an evaluation.

Decoding a Rolex Model Number

Rolex model numbers aren't just random digits — they follow a system, and understanding it can tell you a lot before you ever bring the watch in.

  • Reference number (usually 4–6 digits, found on the case): identifies the specific model. For example, "116610" identifies a specific Submariner variation.
  • First digits often indicate the model family (116 = Submariner Date family in that era).
  • Later digits can indicate material, bezel type, or dial configuration.
  • Suffix letters (like "LN" for "Lunette Noire," meaning black bezel) further specify the exact variant.

Two watches that look nearly identical can have significantly different values depending on subtle reference number differences — things like bezel material, dial color, or even which factory produced a specific batch.

Is It Really Worth What You Think?

It's a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on more than the brand name. Two of the biggest surprises we see from sellers:

  • A "common" model can be worth more than a "rare" one. Certain steel sports models are in such high demand right now that they exceed the resale value of some gold or diamond-set pieces.
  • Aftermarket modifications lower value. Custom dials, added diamonds, or replacement parts not original to the watch typically decrease resale value, even though they may have cost extra when added.

The only reliable way to know your watch's true value is a professional evaluation — market conditions shift, and online estimates are often based on outdated or incomplete data.

Is It Worth More Melted?

This is a common question, especially for older or damaged gold watches — and the answer has drastically fluctuated with the record breaking price of metals.  Our experts know the market and can give you an honest answer.

Bring It In Before You Decide

Whether you're unsure about authenticity, curious about your watch's history, or just want an honest number before making a decision, our specialists are happy to take a look — no pressure, no obligation. What looks like "just an old watch" might be worth far more than you expect.
